This past week I helped one of my best friends, and incredible artist, Chad Weaver, move out of his Williamsburg apartment and into a new sublet on the Upper East Side. What's so fun about helping an artist move rather than any other person is that it's an invitation to see all their hidden art, the things that they don't show just anyone and/or their works in progress.
As a recent graduate of Parsons New School for Design, Chad promotes his work in a very specific way. As he states on his website, 'My work is dark, surreal, and borderline erotic.' So it was exciting to see pieces he's done that show other sides of his work. Between the thousands of sketches (and I do mean thousands. He has hundreds of sketchbooks), and over thirty beautiful paintings, I got to see his silly side (check out the famous comic book heros done his way. He has a whole book of them.), his sweet side (I love the beautiful sketch of the woman with her head tilted down, or the long thin painting of the old man.), and art that he even did as a young boy. Take a look at the portrait he did of me for my birthday!
Chad was gracious enough to let me photograph a few of these hidden gems, but only a few. Besides, he can't give away all his secrets.
The man on the right, Chad sketched when he was in eighth grade. EIGHTH GRADE! And yes, that is Lindsey Lohan in the back.
